About This Course
Modern agriculture faces mounting pressure from climate variability, soil degradation, declining biodiversity, and the rising cost of synthetic inputs. Organic farming and permaculture offer proven, ecologically grounded alternatives that enhance productivity, restore natural systems, and build long-term food security — particularly in rural and peri-urban communities across Africa and the developing world.
This five-day programme by TrainingComplex is designed to bridge the gap between ecological theory and practical field application. Participants are guided through the core principles of organic farming — from soil biology and composting to crop rotation, pest management, and certification pathways — alongside the design ethics and techniques of permaculture, including water harvesting, agroforestry integration, zone planning, and community-scale food systems.
The course recognises that rural transformation requires more than technical knowledge. It also addresses the business dimensions of organic production: accessing premium markets, building farmer cooperatives, managing organic inputs supply chains, and linking smallholder producers to certification bodies and value chains. Participants leave with both the agronomic skills and the entrepreneurial confidence to champion sustainable agriculture in their communities.
Whether you are an extension officer supporting smallholder farmers, an NGO programme manager designing rural livelihoods interventions, an agribusiness professional diversifying into organic markets, or a farmer leader seeking to upgrade your practice, this course delivers practical tools, field-tested techniques, and a professional network to accelerate your impact.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need prior experience in permaculture or organic farming to attend?
No prior experience in permaculture design or organic certification is required. The course begins with foundational principles and progressively builds to advanced application. A basic background in agriculture or rural development — whether formal or practical — is sufficient preparation.
Will participants receive a certificate at the end of the course?
Yes. All participants who complete the full five-day programme will receive a TrainingComplex Certificate of Completion in Organic Farming and Permaculture. This certificate is a recognised professional development credential and can be submitted to your organisation or used as part of a continuing education portfolio.
Is this course available online or only in-person?
The course is primarily delivered in-person to enable the hands-on field exercises, soil assessments, and design practicums that are central to the learning experience. However, a live virtual option is also available for participants who cannot travel, and the virtual sessions are adapted to include remote-friendly design and planning activities.
What materials and tools will participants need to bring?
All training materials, templates, and resource guides are provided by TrainingComplex. For field sessions, participants are advised to bring appropriate outdoor clothing and footwear. Participants are encouraged to bring maps, photographs, or descriptions of their own farm or project site to use in the design practicum exercises.
Can organisations send a group of staff to attend together?
Yes, and group attendance is strongly encouraged. Teams of extension officers, programme staff, or cooperative leaders who attend together are better positioned to apply and sustain the practices learned. TrainingComplex also offers customised in-house delivery of this programme for organisations wishing to train larger groups at their own location or project site.
